The gnashing of teeth, the hurling of paint, the brandishing of paintbrushes! Woe and hellfire!
Yeah, Art Day is getting put off until tomorrow….. because i got stuff to do, outdoors, in the sunshine.
However, he was captured only two blocks away when his van ran out of gas.
When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error, he replied,
“Monsieur, that is the reason I stole the paintings,”
I had no Monet
to buy Degas
to make the Van Gogh!’
You know what? It’s too freaking nice outside to be stuck in the studio.
I also have some other non-art things to do on this lovely afternoon, but rather than cancel Art Day outright, I got up super early this morning and did a little project. Nothing elaborate or fancy, but certainly colorful. And I got to paint outside!
So, without further ado: I picked up this metal sun wall-hanging a few days ago. I liked the design, but the faux-brown patina was boring as hell.

Of course, i can make anything exciting. Amirite?

Well, with a little paint i can. I picked out some cool colors to match the blues and greens of my new deck furniture.

But first…. GOLD SPRAYPAINT!

And after that i began with some violet paint, and started on the design around the outer edge.

Added a little blue & teal…..

At which point Finnegan the goblin-bunny decided he was going to come over and be helpful. And by helpful i mean, “hop on over and knock everything around, and get purple paint on his ears.”

Finnegan is an aspiring artist.

So here is the design (post-finn) with some green added in. He says it was his idea to add the green parts.

Finnegan has good taste. Myself, I quite like it so far.

Next i added some minimal details to the face. It’s going to hang on the side of my house and the sun hits that spot in the afternoon…… I wanted it to GLOW, so i didn’t add too much paint to the golden sun-part.

And there’s the finished face.

And now the sunlight is starting to creep across the deck….

Super shiny!!!

Tah-dah!
A few weeks ago I received a letter via snail mail from a dear friend who I haven’t seen in years. We’ve been semi-in-touch via the internet recently, but for many years after “teh art skoolz” we were both busy with stuff. One of the fabulous things about Jess is how she will just drop me a letter or a card out of the blue, and reading it makes me feel as if we’ve never missed a day out of our friendship. I confess I am awfully flaky about writing back, but she sticks around and is always cheering for me.
Hi Jessums! Art Day is about you today : )
Jess asked if I wanted to try exchanging ACEO’s (Art Cards, Editions & Originals) in order to help get her creative mojo flowing. Basically an art card is a little bitty 2.5″ x 3.5″ artwork (like a trading or baseball card) done on some kind of sturdy stock, and it’s an easy way to make original art accessible to anyone. I’ve done small artworks and paintings before, so it should be a piece of cake.
mmm, cake. om nom nom.
Anyhow, Jess wrote to say that she needs an art-card buddy (and she seems to think I don’t need a kick in the ass, hahaha). This is actually something I’ve wanted to work on for some time, and have been awfully lazy about following through with it.
So yeah Jess! Let’s do it!
And just for fun, if anybody else wants to play along, just lemme know.
ACEO’s can be made from just about anything, so I’ve hauled out the usual suspects from among my favorite supplies: paint, sharpies, scrap paper, ribbon, buts of fabric, etc.
